Well, here we go again. I just mentioned to someone that i have studies spanish and that i´m going to be a spanish teacher.

As in, first it was like:

Me: i´m writing my dissertation.
The other: working or studying?
Me: studying. to be a spanish teacher.
Other : really cool

(and goes on to ask some more questions like: are you in spain?, in india, how long?, is it in demand?, marriage plans? etc.)

But 'Other' can´t control it.
Now Other: if u dont mind then can i ask u something.......why have u chosen spanish..and further studies in it...

I have no grudges against 'Other'. i´m just writing this cause it´s always bugged me.

I mean, i hate that question. It´s not curiosity. It´s just saying "you´re dumb", "what´s the point in that?" etc.

Does anyone ever ask a 'to be engineer or doctor' why engineering? why medicine? NO.

So don´t ask me!

you mean you aren't dumb? oooooooooh!! that's news to me >:)

we engineers aren't questioned because we run the world. we make the world the way it is, and then we run it. are we clear on that?

aaaand well, coming to doctors . . . . i guess they're ok too because they help ease the pain in our (engineers') index fingers which we develop by clicking away to glory, while in the process of running this world!! so, they kind of contribute indirectly in running the world by facilitating us to directly run the world. that's how they earned their place. get it?

-w (the jerk in me is awake)

P.S. - i hear hoofbeats in the distance, of a massive debate in the comments section of this post. then again, i might be wrong - you might end up admitting to the above 'facts'.

hey w... take a walk dude... u know its all crap. Am in the same boat, and now in a town very near u... ;-)

Ashwini, i guess i know who u r talking abt and i followed that part of the conversation on an another public medium.

Anyways, i would ask any body like u why u choose what ur doing baap simply cos we(as engineers) are mundane and doing it cos of regularity rather that choice.

Anyways, i think u would rather enjoy watching the faces of ppl asking such questions rather than taking offence to such stuff...

a.g., why are you talking to frogs in wells?

May be Carrie Pilby's attitude might suit you. When someone
asks her what movie she is renting, she refuses to answer on principle. Not that she likes to rent X-rated movies, but because she knows that the ensuing discussion would inevitably lead to her defending her own tastes to someone else. Why should she?

ash, I just have one question for you: why have you taken spanish, and why have you decided to do further studies in it? Anyway, I think it is cool...quo quo quo quo quo quo quo quo quo quo quo quo quo quo quo quo quo quo quo quo quo quo quo quo quo quo quo quo quo quo quo quo quo quo quo quo quo......love you and miss you so much!

well..i agree its really stupid for someone to ask such a question.

education in any field and profession of any type is as respectable and noble as any other.

a person questioning that and believing in the superiority of any particular education and profession is actually questioning his/her own knowledge or better still presenting a statement of fact about himself/herself that "ok i am sorry;i am too dumb to understand that one can do higher studies in the field of language and my knowledge is limited only to (with all due respect to these studies and professions)engineering and medical."

comparing different professions is like choosing the 10 best nations or cultures of all times.its lamentable!!!

but well we have all kinds of people in our world and they make the world an interesting(of course sometimes irritating also) place to live in.

this botheration and debate is not worth.so you need not worry.
enjoy your life!!

afterall spanish became the excuse of our meeting !!!

in a way, i think when someone asks you that question, i guess they are simply curious (in fact sometimes when they are not saying you are dumb) about your reason for choosing a road less traveled. after all it baffles us (and them) why the choice of being successful as an engineer or a doctor hasn't tempted you. what is this muse that has led you into unchartered territories and exotic avenues?

it is your prerogative to ignore us and not be bothered. or you can choose to inspire us. tell us what we are missing out on.

Point.

If anyone asks "Why have you chosen XXXXX?", however, I'd not be offended. I'd take it as curiosity, try to keep the irritation (which is inevitable 'cause it's not an easy question to answer) aside for a moment and try to explain. :)

actually i´ve replied so many times to the question that i know the answer by heart. i´m sure that even in my sleep i´d be able to tell you why i chose spanish.

Hehe... ok

What is the answer?

i think it's a great question. the fact that you can't answer it (or don't want to answer it) speaks volumes about your intelligence.
